Army-Navy Football Game 2023

Army-Navy Football Game 2023
Cadet March-On

There's something undeniably special about longstanding traditions, especially those steeped in history and patriotism. This year, I had the unique opportunity to attend my first Army-Navy game, the annual college football classic that has captured the hearts of Americans since 1890. It was, in fact, a day of firsts; this was the first time the game was held in New England in it's 124 year history and the first time Navy's theme for the game was centered around the Submarine Force. The atmosphere on this unseasonably mild December day was positively electric - a perfect blend of rivalry, respect, and camaraderie.

The excitement began long before the kickoff, months ago - when my sister-in-law Tara let me know that she had scored tickets to the game and asked me if I'd like to join the festivities - I was honored, and of course, said yes! So we had a whole family-house-divided thing going on, as Tara has history as an Army military spouse at Fort Benning and I was once a steely-eyed killer of the deep in the US Navy Submarine force. This game was particularly apropos, the universe seemed to align for us both; The Army theme this year paid tribute to the 3rd Infantry Division!

We got to Gillette Stadium long before kickoff to get the full experience. The tailgating scene was a festive mosaic of colors and sounds, with fans from both sides showcasing their pride. Army and Navy supporters, many of whom were fellow veterans, shared stories, laughter, and friendly banter. The annual Army Navy game is really more than a just a college football game; it is a reunion of sorts, a gathering of individuals united by their love for their teams and their country.

Navy Cadet March-On

One of the main highlights for me was the march-on. Several hours before the game, both the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy cadets and midshipmen, march onto the field in perfect formation. This display of discipline and unity sets the tone for the game, and is a poignant reminder of the dedication and commitment of the young men and women who choose to serve our country.

The game itself was a riveting display of sportsmanship and skill. Despite the fierce rivalry, there is an underlying sense of respect that I've rarely seen in other sporting events. The spirit of the game transcended the competition, embodying the spirit of unity and mutual respect. In the end, Army prevailed...final score 17 - 11.

Finally, another unique and moving part of this game was the post-game sing-a-longs. First, the losing team’s alma mater is sung, followed by the winner's, with both teams standing together in solidarity. In that moment, it is clear that the game is about more than just football. It was about honor, respect, and the bonds that tie our military branches together.

This was one of the most unique sporting events I've ever attended, was particularly apropos for me, and now I want to go every year!

GO NAVY!
